Alan Macdonald
Senior Technical Advisor
Kabul, Afghanistan
As Senior Technical Advisor, Alan is responsible
for the planning, execution and implementation of
the landmine impact survey in Afghanistan. He provides
the technical and managerial leadership for the
survey while working closely with the Quality Assurance
Monitors to ensure that survey standards are met
and that information provided by the survey teams
is complete and accurate, and in accordance with
survey protocols for UN certification. In addition,
he liaises and coordinates activities with MCPA,
MACA, UNDP, and represents SAC to the UN and government
of Afghanistan.
Alan has eight years experience in humanitarian mine action with HALO Trust programs in Afghanistan, Sudan,
Mozambique, Somaliland, Angola and Eritrea. He was the Africa Desk Officer at HALO headquarters in Scotland from
1998 – 2001 where he managed the start-up of new programs in Somaliland and Eritrea. He began his career in
Afghanistan. From 2001 until joining SAC, he was the Program Manager for HALO Trust’s mine clearance program in
Eritrea responsible for 470 national staff, the financial management of projects, the deployment of manual, survey,
UXO and mechanical teams as well as authoring project reports and coordination with the Eritrean National Demining
Authority. Alan was a Commissioned Officer in the British Army, where from 1981 – 1993, he served in Hong Kong,
the United Kingdom, the Falkland Islands, Brunei, Belize, Northern Ireland, the Gulf War, Germany and Uganda.
Alan, who is married with two children, received his post-graduate diploma in Farm Business Management from
Aberdeen University in Scotland in 1994. He is a citizen of the United Kingdom.
