Consultant
As the Senior Statistician consultant, Larry is responsible for assisting in Landmine Impact Survey
instrumentation and analysis. He advises SAC and its partners in methodological questions as
necessary to support country surveys. In particular, he advises SAC on quality assurance processes
for the surveys, namely sampling for false negatives.
Larry began his humanitarian career over twenty-five years ago, serving in the Peace Corps in
Benin, West Africa, as a Statistician and Adjunct Professor. Since then he has had several research
positions, visiting scientist, and assistant professor positions at Johns Hopkins University (School of
Public Health, School of Medicine, School of Hygiene and Public Health), Institut Gustave-Roussy (France),
University of Michigan, and the University of Maryland. In 1996, Larry became an Associate Professor in the
Department of International Health at The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health with a joint
appointment in the Department of Biostatistics. In 2003, he became a full Professor in the same dual departments.
Larry is a biostatistician working primarily on infectious diseases around the world (Brazil, Haiti,
Indonesia, Iran, Peru, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe). His major areas of application are vaccines, HIV, and
vitamin A. He also has been the Co-Director of the Institute for Vaccine Safety since 1997.
In 1987, Larry received his Ph.D. in Biostatistics from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.
